Utica Chieftains Race for the Cure

Utica High students participate in annual "Amazing Race" to raise money for breast cancer in honor of Nichole Forrand

Utica High School’s annual “Amazing Race” took place on November 10th.  The race takes place during the first twenty minutes of each third hour class and each class must choose one spirited chieftain to represent them as a “runner”.

Each “runner” usually dresses up in pink clothes and breast cancer ribbons. Most of the boys who participate will wear girls’ short shorts, tutus, bras over their clothes, and many other “girly” accessories. There were two winners for best dressed runners this year. They were junior Josh Pannebecker and sophomore DJ Labash. Both boys sported bras and tons of pink clothing.

Once the race begins, the runner must then run donations of no more then $20 at a time down to the library and make as many trips as they can during the twenty minutes. After the twenty minutes is over, student council members count and sort all of the raised funds.

This year, students raised about $3000 in that short twenty minutes to donate to the Susan G. Komen foundation in honor of 2010 graduate, Nichole Forrand. The student council also sold t-shirts the week preceding the race to promote the fundraiser and also to raise funds.

The whole school was excited and ready to race to raise money for the cure twenty dollars at a time.
