David Faber Named Utica Police Department’s Interim Chief

Detective Sgt. Dave Faber was named interim police chief after the city put its search for a permanent chief on hold.

Veteran Utica Detective Sgt. Dave Faber was named the new interim police chief at Tuesday’s .

Mayor Jacqueline Noonan called Faber a “perfect choice” for the job. Faber, 49, has been a police officer for 31 years, 18 of them were with the Utica Police Department.

Before then, he spent 11 years as a military police officer in the U.S. Air Force and worked for two years as an officer on the Hamtramck Police Department.

Sgts. Jerome Carroll and Sean Coady will work closely with Faber on running the police department.

“I look forward to the challenge,” said Faber. “(Former) Chief Michael Reaves pointed the department down the right road, and my job will be to keep us on that same path until a permanent chief is named.”

Faber said he doesn’t plan on making any drastic changes while interim chief because the department is running smoothly.

“We are doing a pretty good job of serving the public and I don’t see a need to change things,” he said. However, he added that the department does plan on making a new hire soon because its down to 13 patrol officers from 17.

The chief’s position has been empty since for a job as the head of the Port Huron Police Department.

In May, Noonan announced the search for a new chief was on hold because of budgetary issues. Noonan said more than 40 people had applied for the chief’s job, and the field was narrowed down to the top 18. Those 18 were notified that the search has been put on hold.

Faber said he did not apply for the chief’s position for personal reasons.

“I am more than happy to keep working in the on the basis as long as the city needs me to. I will also continue to perform my detective duties too,” said Faber.
