Last Chance to Sign up For Shelby's Police Citizen's Academy

Shelby Township police are still accepting applications for its fall Citizen's Police Academy, scheduled to start on Oct. 12.

The 2011 Shelby Township Citizens Academy will in no way mimic the 1980s slapstick comedy movie Police Academy: Citizens on Patrol.

This popular bi-annual citizens class introduces residents and businesses that are serious about keeping the streets of Shelby safe. The class also teaches participants about many different aspects of the police department and its day-to-day operations.

Topics scheduled for the fall session include:

  • Criminal law and police procedures
  • Narcotics and VICE investigations
  • The department’s K-9 unit
  • Criminal investigations
  • Traffic stops, accident investigation and alcohol enforcement
  • Family abuse and juvenile procedures
  • Crime prevention and Neighborhood Watch.

The fall 2011 program begins Oct. 12 and will be held on the following six Wednesday evenings.

The class is free and limited to about 60 participants. However, Sgt. Ken Cazabon, one of the academy’s organizers, said there are nearly a dozen spots left that he’s hoping to fill.
