Off-Duty Troy Police Officer Helps Shelby Nab Home Invasion Suspect

The officer saw a man attempting to break into a vehicle and called the Shelby Township Police Department.

Off-duty Troy Police Detective Lisa Rockafellow recently helped the Shelby Township Police Department catch and identify a man suspected of breaking into several vehicles and homes and stealing items, according to a media release from the .

According to Troy Police, during the first few weeks of December 2011, several Shelby Township residents had reported items stolen from their unlocked cars and garages, including purses and snow blowers. While off duty on Dec. 12, 2011, Rockafellow saw a man attempting to break into a vehicle parked in a driveway in a Shelby Township subdivision and immediately called the Shelby Township Police Department.

Officers arrested Shady Bin Emad-Sami Karim, 23, of Shelby Township, who was charged with larceny from auto and released on bond. Karim had also previously been arrested and charged with tampering with an automobile in Troy.

While out on bond from the Shelby Township and Troy charges, more items were stolen from vehicles in the same general area in Shelby Township where Karim was originally arrested. After further investigation, the Shelby Township Police Department obtained a search warrant for Karim’s home in Shelby Township. 

Evidence obtained during that search resulted in the additional charges of larceny in a building and receiving and concealing stolen property. Karim's original bond was revoked and new bond set at $5,000 (for violating bond conditions), $5,000 (for larceny in a building) and $1,000 (for receiving and concealing stolen property).

On Feb. 28, 2012, Karim pleaded guilty to all three charges at 41-A District Court in Shelby and was sentenced to 30 days in Macomb County Jail and 1 year probation.

Karim also has multiple charges of fraud against him in Wayne County.
