Police: Apartments Evacuated after Man Seen Carrying in Gallons of Gasoline

The Shelby Township police evacuated an apartment building on Utica Road early Tuesday morning after a man was seen carrying in multiple containers of gasoline.

A man suspected of possibly trying to light a Shelby Township apartment on fire was arrested around 4 a.m. Tuesday.

A patrol officer watched as the man, who police described as suspicious, carried several containers filled with gasoline into an apartment at the Shelby Oaks Complex on Utica Road.

The apartment building was evacuated and the man was arrested.

The incident remains under investigation and charges against the man are pending.  

“The action of the police officer averted what could have been an explosive and deadly situation,” said a news release by the Shelby Township Police Department.
