Police: Drunken Driver Passes Out at Traffic Light on Hall Road

The Utica police arrested a man on Hall Road after they said he passed out in his vehicle while stopped at a red light.

A 19-year-old Shelby Township man was arrested on charges of operating while under the influence of alcohol on Sept. 6 after a Utica police officer found him sleeping inside his vehicle at green light on Hall Road.

A Utica police officer said in a report that just before 3 a.m., he noticed a vehicle had remained stationary on M-59 after the traffic light turned green.

The cars behind began to honk and pass the stationary vehicle. When the officer arrived, he noticed a man "slumped over" sleeping in the driver's seat. The vehicle was still in gear and the driver's foot was on the brake.

The officer said the man was "in a deep sleep" when he knocked on the window to wake up the driver.

The driver told police he had five or six beers at a concert with friends earlier in the evening. According to the police report, the man failed two sobriety tests and blew a .186 percent on a blood alcohol test.

His vehicle was impounded and the man was arrested and taken to the Utica police station.

According to state stastics, Utica police officers made the most drunken driving arrests in Michigan based on department size.

This kid is lucky he didn't kill someone. I believe .18 is "super" drunk driving. He should get at least 6 months jail time. And hopefully his car will be available at the upcoming police auction.

Finally, some good police work! Great job. Hopefully, they throw the book at this kid & make him ride the bus for a couple of years. This kind of behavior happens way too much!

He's 19!!!..... You're missing the point that he's 2 years shy of the legal drinking age yet admits to drinkiing AND driving. There needs to be a harsher punishment for this. He has no idea how dangerous his actions were.
