UPDATE: Ex-McDonald's Employee Accused of Locking Workers in Freezer

A former McDonald's employee accused of locking two people in a freezer early Thursday morning was arraigned Friday at 41A District Court on four felony charges.

A former McDonald's employee suspected of robbing a Shelby Township McDonald's Thursday and locking two employees in a walk-in freezer was arraigned Friday on four felony counts.

Judge Douglas Shepherd arraigned Steven Wayne Thompson, 20, of Shelby Township, on two counts of unlawful imprisonment and two counts of armed robbery.

Thompson is being held on a $500,000 cash surety bond.

Investigators said Thompson was wearing all black when he somehow gained entrance to the locked McDonald's on Van Dyke, just north of 21 Mile Road around 3 a.m. Thursday and robbed the employees at gunpoint.

Detective Lt. Stan Muszynski said before leaving, Thompson locked two employees in a walk-in freezer.

The employees were rescued around 6 a.m. when a store manager arrived to work but couldn't locate any of the employees. The manager told police he heard pounding coming from the walk-in freezer, and found them locked in.

Muszynski said, "The employees were cold but OK." It was zero degrees inside the freezer.

After conducting interviews and a follow-up investigation, Thompson was arrested around 11 a.m. Thursday.

He'll be back in court Feb. 13 at 1:30 p.m. for a preliminary exam.
