Shelby Township Honors Top Police Officers

Investigations into synthetic drugs, high-profile arrests, rescuing injured and disabled individuals and preventing a suicide are are just some of the actions of Shelby Township officers that have been recognized.

The Shelby Township Police Department announced the 2012 Officer of the year and department recipients for the past year.

Officer of the Year

The 2012 Officer of the Year is Det. Troy Titchenell, who is assigned to the narcotics division. He conducted and was the lead investigator on the largest and first synthetic drug investigation in the State of Michigan since the new law took effect last July.

Department commendations

  • Officer David Jacquemain received a Letter of Commendation for his actions while off-duty at Cabelas in Dundee, which led to the arrest of a suspect for sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl.
  • Officer Phillip Young received a Letter of Commendation for his actions  that led to the closure of numerous larceny complaints.
  • Officer Gregory Neubacher received a Letter of Commendation for actions leading to the arrest of a larceny suspect and the recovery of a large amount of stolen property.
  • Officer Robert Veprauskas received a Letter of Commendation for his actions for his actions that resulted in the recovery of thousands of dollars of stolen property and the closure of several outstanding larceny complaints.
  • Officer Paul Fox received a Letter of Commendation for his ability to rescue an incapacitated elderly driver from a moving vehicle. 
  • Comm-Tech Kelly Donahue received a Letter of Commendation for giving post-delivery instructions for a baby having difficulty breathing.
  • Officer Jason Zuk received a Lifesaving Citation, 2nd Degree, for performing CPR to save a citizen's life.
  • Officer Terrance Hogan received a Lifesaving Citation, 2nd Degree, for using an AED and performing CPR to save a citizen's life.
  • Officer James Osterland received a Meritorious Citation for assisting EMS with the stabilizing of a 13-year-old boy who was impaled with his bicycle handlebars.
  • Sgt. Scott Trumbo and Officers Brian Bunch, Paul Sorbo, Jeffrey Bellomo, Gregory Neubacher, Andrew Gammicchia and Daniel Price received a Lifesaving Citation First Degree, for rescuing many senior citizen and disabled residents from a fully-involved apartment building fire.
  • Lt. Stanley Muszynski and Officers Timothy Schafnitz, James Osterland, Matthew Stachowicz and Phillip Young received a Unit Letter of Commendation for evacuating residents from an apartment building fire.
  • Sgt. Scott Trumbo and Officers Ronald Lehman, Paul Fox, Phillip Young and Jason Hansen received a Unit Letter of Commendation for preventing a 58-year-old man with a gun from committing suicide.
  • Officers Timothy Schafnitz and Paul Sorbo received a Letter of Commendation for their part in making a larceny arrest that closed numerous larceny cases.
  • Officers Lawrence Rice and Robert Veprauskas received a Letter of Commendation for arresting a burglary suspect that lead to the closure of numerous home invasion cases in Macomb County.
  • Comm-Techs Bonnie Bowman, David Marshall and Kelly Donahue received a Letter of Commendation for their coordinated emergency services on a large apartment building fire.
  • Sgt. Jason Schmittler and Detectives Troy Titchenell, Robert Heisler and Ronald Lehman, the department's narcotics officers, received a Letter of Commendation for their extensive investigation into K2 sales in the township that lead to a large seizure of large amounts of drugs, cash, vehicles and six arrests.
