Utica PD Looking For Witnesses In Fatal Pedestrian Crash

The Utica police department is looking for witnesses in last week's fatal pedestrian crash on Hall Road and Van Dyke Avenue.

The crash happened around 6:20 a.m. on Oct. 14. Utica Police Chief Dave Faber said a 61-year-old Sterling Heights man was hit by a vehicle while trying to cross the intersection of Hall Road and Van Dyke.

The victim has been identified as Robert Smith.

Faber said Smith was on his way home from work when he was struck.

The crash remains under investigation. However, Faber said early indications reveal a 41-year-old Clinton Township man driving a 1999 Saturn drove through a green light at the intersection when his vehicle struck Smith. The investigation reveals Smith crossed the road against the the cross walk signs.

Smith was transported to Troy Beaumont Hospital where he later died.

"It's my understanding that it was raining pretty hard that morning," said Faber.

No charges in the case have been issued. Once the investigation is completed, Utica will turn its findings over to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office.

Faber said because it was so early in the morning, the police do not have any other independent witnesses. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to call the Utica police at 586-731-2345.
