Werner Named 2010 Shelby Township Firefighter of the Year

The 2010 Shelby Firefighter of the Year goes to Brian Werner.

Shelby Township firefighter Medic Brian Werner was named the 2010 V.F.W. Firefighter of the Year.

Shelby Fire Chief Gene Shepherd said he chose Werner because he is a visionary and has helped the department solve problems.

Werner has researched pager systems and set up radio standard operating guidelines for the Shelby Township Department and the Macomb County Tactical Rescue Team.

The 10-year veteran in the Shelby Township Fire Department also serves on the Trench Rescue Team and is a member of the Macomb County Tactical Rescue Team.

Shepherd said Werner assisted the Macomb County Tactical Rescue Team in December when a natural gas explosion at a furniture store in Wayne killed two people and injured two more.

“Brian is dedicated to the service of the fire department and has been a bonus in 2010,” said Shepherd.

Werner said he was honored and humbled by the honor.

“I was shocked initially. … After hearing the chief, I am pretty honored that he has a respect and appreciation for what I do on a daily basis,” said Werner.

At Tuesday night’s Shelby Township Board of Trustees meeting, the proud father of a 13-year-old girl showed off his daughter’s turkey hunting skills.

Werner is a Kimball Township resident.
