Board Approves Tax Breaks for Avon Gear

A Shelby Township company says a tax break will help it secure funding for more employees.

The has approved tax breaks for Avon Gear Company.

The company, under the Industrial Exemption Certificate for new personal property, had requested a 12-year extension on tax breaks in order to purchase more than $2 million in new equipment. The tax extension was approved, but the term was limited to five years.

Ahee said the new equipment would help the company, which already employs 162 people, create more than 15 jobs for the company.

“It’s really a win-win situation,” said Jim Ahee.

In the 1970s, the Industrial Exemption Certificate was created to encourage manufacturers to invest in new machinery and expand within the city.

Avon Gear Company moved from Rochester Hills to Shelby Township more than 12 years ago. The company said 70 percent of its business is supplying to the Caterpillar Inc. transmission plant, and its forecast for the coming year is in excess of $60 million.
