Chief: 2011 Shelby Township Firefighter of the Year 'All Around Good Guy'

Shelby Township's Firefighter of the Year presented award Tuesday evening.

Lt. Medic John McCoy was named the 2011 Shelby Township Firefighter of the year.

Shelby Township VFW Old Settlers Post 4659 presented McCoy with the award at Tuesday evening’s Board of Trustees meeting.

McCoy has been on the Shelby Fire Department for more than 21 years, and has served as the Local 1338 Union president and trustee.  Fire Chief Gene Shepherd said his role with the union during the past 15 years has helped the department control costs and solve departmental issues.

McCoy has also been department station officer in charge of building operations for all four facilities for many years and the station commander for station four, which is the department’s busiest station.

“Firefighters like john are hard to find,” said Gene Shepherd during the award ceremony. “Besides all that - he’s an all around good guy.”
