Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day
Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day is set for Saturday, April 28th from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. for Shelby Township Republic Services/Allied Waste single family residential customers.  Collection will be held on the Shelby Township Municipal Grounds (52700 Van Dyke - southeast of the intersection of 24 Mile and Van Dyke).

Collection is limited to household hazardous waste only -- no commercial waste accepted - quantities may be restricted.

Service is provided by Republic Services/Allied Waste for their customers only.  Questions, please phone (586) 731-5990.

Following is a partial listing of items that ARE acceptable for collection:
pesticides, herbicides, household and oven cleaners, drain cleaner, pool chlorine, oil-based paint, gasoline, used motor oil, antifreeze, kerosene, aerosol cans, moth balls, paint thinner, deck sealer, car batteries, small household batteries, adhesives, mercury containing devices (i.e. thermometers and thermostats), compact and tube fluorescent light bulbs and computer equipment. Substances are to be kept in labeled or original containers; do not mix; avoid contact. Please transport waste in vehicle trunk and contain leaking waste in pails.

Eyeglasses, Hearing Aids and Cell Phones are also collected and donated to charitable organizations.

Disposal of Cooking Oil/Grease
Here is the perfect opportunity for safe disposal of grease from your deep fryer.   Improper disposal has created recent problems in the sanitary sewer system, causing blockages and backups into residents’ basements.  And, despite the property damage issues, disposing of oil and grease in the storm and sanitary sewer systems is illegal.   If you can’t participate in Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day, you can dispose of the oil and grease in the regular trash by mixing it with unscented kitty litter or sand to solidify the oil and then placing it in a plastic garbage bag (maximum weight 40 lbs).

In the winter you can also dispose of the cooking oil and grease by freezing it in the original container and then placing it in a plastic bag in the trash.  It is important that it remains in a frozen state, or it may spill out onto the road when the trash is compacted.
