Holiday Inn Express Asks for Site Plan Approval in Rochester Hills

The three-story hotel would be built near Adams Road and M-59.

Rochester Hills City Councilmembers will consider this week the approval of a three-story Holiday Inn Express off Adams Road.

The hotel would be on 2.82 acres off Marketplace Circle between Meijer and Grand Tavern. It would have 83 rooms, a fitness center and an indoor swimming pool.

The developer and owner is the Rochester Hills-based Amerilodge Group.

The city's Technical Review Committee approved the plans earlier this fall, noting that the plans meet all code requirements and were worked out in "numerous concept meetings with the Fire Department, Engineering, and Planning Department," according to a memo from the city's Planning and Economic Development Director, Ed Anzek.

City Council will consider the site plan at a 7 p.m. Monday meeting at Rochester Hills City Hall. The site plan is attached as a PDF file to this story.

Also on Monday night's agenda:

  • A request for the purchase of $70,000 in fireworks for the annual Festival of the Hills show.
  • A presentation by the Rochester Hills Fire Department on enhancements to the EMS services.
  • Purchases of software, office supplies, wetlands and environmental consulting services and geotechnical engineering services.

The concern is what happens when the hotel rooms go unbooked and the site becomes an eyesore? Have you seen the hotels near Opdyke and Featherstone? Not pretty. Or how about when people start loitering there because it’s vacant? Did you not read the earlier story about the problems at WalMart? Don't we have enough trouble in that general vicinity? I say NO to the hotel.

There's that new hotel at Lapeer and Dutton. There's also more near OU. What's the vacancy rate around here? Do we really need another hotel???

Unless we build several hotels to support an empty stadium and fail auto company, we should be ok.
