How Supportive of Gov. Rick Snyder Are You Now, Shelby Township and Utica?

For one Shelby Township resident, quoted this week in the Detroit Free Press, Snyder's about-face on right-to-work has put him "in the toilet" as far as he is concerned.

From the emergency manager law to eliminating the Michigan Business Tax, Gov. Rick Snyder's policies have garnered mixed reviews since his election in 2010, but a recent poll suggests his controversial push to make Michigan a right-to-work state has shifted many voters against him.

Support for Gov. Rick Snyder, specifically as it relates to jobs, is falling, according to a recent EPIC-MRA of Lansing poll released exclusively to the Detroit Free Press and WXYZ-TV.

For Shelby Township resident Ron Bowman, 64, who took part in the poll and was later quoted by the Free Press, Snyder's about-face on right-to-work was the key issue that tipped the governor out of favor with the self-described independent.

"The right-to-work thing puts him in the toilet as far as I'm concerned," Bowman told the Free Press.

Although not a fan of Snyder's tax on pensions or changes to the homestead property tax credit, it was right-to-work that pushed the former union member from neutral to strongly opposed in his feelings toward the governor.

And Bowman isn't the only one.

The EPIC-MRA poll, conducted between Feb. 5 and 10, found 61 percent of Michigan voters gave the governor a negative job rating today compared to 48 percent in November, according to the Free Press.

Snyder's favorability also dropped to 42 percent from 55 percent in November. The Free Press reports this included a double-digit drop among Republican voters.

The poll surveyed 600 likely voters (42 percent Democrats, 37 percent Republicans, 18 percent independents) with a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points, according to the Free Press.
