New Shelby Township Clerk Sworn in Today

Stan Grot was sworn in at noon Wednesday as the new Shelby Township Clerk.

The Shelby Township Board of trustees appointed Stan Grot the new Shelby Township Clerk Tuesday evening by a 5 to 1 vote.

Grot will fill the remainder of former term, which is due to expire in November.

Shelby Township has been short a full-time clerk since Kowal resigned at the beginning of the year to take a similar position in Auburn Hills.

The appointment was made possible Tuesday evening after the that required a replacement be chosen by a unanimous vote.

If a clerk were not appointed by mid-February, a special election would have been held in May.

Several members of the audience spoke on Grot's behalf, and applauded his work with the Michigan Republican party.

Lisa Manzella, who did not vote in favor of Grot, said she was disappointed that most of the recommendations made to her on Grot's behalf came from Lansing and people in other communities rather than Shelby Township residents.

During Grot's acceptance speech, he accused Manzella of leaking the interview answers to several candidates applying for the position before a formal interview with the board.

"The residents of Shelby Township need to know the process became tainted," he said.

. Grot is a former Sterling Heights City Council Member, County Commissioner, deputy Macomb County treasurer and assistant Michigan secretary of state.

Grot was sworn in at noon Wednesday at the Township Municipal Hall.
