Now Hiring: New Shelby Police Chief

Shelby Township approved the job description language for a new chief of police Tuesday night.

Shelby Township's next police chief will have to meet 31 outlined standards set by the human resource director and the township supervisor.

In a 5-2 vote, the Board of Trustees approved the job description language for a new police chief Tuesday evening.

has been holding down the fort since since the end of September when the Board decided not to renew Leman had held the position for 10 years.

The police chief job description was presented and approved by the Police and Fire Civil Service Commission on Nov. 7.

The two trustees who did not approve of the job description were Clerk Terri Kowal and Trustee Lisa Manzella. Kowal said some of the language on the document was subjective.

Kowal cited example No. 26 of the 31 duties outlined: "inspires passion and excitement around shared goals and values."

"I'm concerned different supervisors may have different ideas of whether the chief is doing that," Kowal said.

Stathakis said he had hoped to convey an idea that a chief should be clear about his or her intentions and can produce important outcomes.

The final document will be provided to the candidates and the testing provider for use in the Dec. 5 assessment. All candidates will then be presented to the Board of Trustees, which will then appoint a chief.
