Profile Candidate: Robert Leman

Former Shelby Township Police Chief Robert Leman is running for Supervisor. Get to know him before you cast your vote.

Former Shelby Township Police Chief Robert Leman is running against current

Leman served as police chief for ten years. In 2011, . The 57-year-old resident announced in Febuary he would run for political office for the first time.

Leman has lived in Shelby Township for more than 10 years with his wife, Jean. The couple attend in Shelby Township.

Together they have three children, Kelly, Robert, Christopher, and a granddaughter Kalya, a daughter-in-law Lori, and soon to be daughter-in-law Allison.

1. What led you to try for the post of supervisor initially?

With 10 years as a major Department Head, I am very familiar with our Township’s government operations. The current supervisor votes for projects benefiting his own special interest group of developer campaign contributors.  I cannot be bought. In my decade of protecting the township, I built up $16 million for future protection costs while expanding police protection. I know how to budget. While I was police chief, Shelby was rated as one of the safest communities in America of its size. I know how to lead. Shelby taxpayers deserve an honest leader. The people of our community deserve much better. I intend to see that I deliver that to them.

2. What do you plan to change if elected?

On day one I intend to restore honesty and integrity to the office of supervisor. I will be a full-time public servant, serving the people and no one else.  I will eliminate no-bid contracts and costly consultants to make daily operation decisions, and I will restore transparency by eliminating backroom deals.

3. If elected, what township issues would you like to focus on?

I will rebuild and restore public confidence in our ability to serve and protect the public. And by that, I mean delivering all of the services we ought to provide in as efficient and cost effective manner as possible.

5. What personal and professional accomplishments are you most proud of?

Professionally, I am most proud of leading one of the most professional and well-trained police departments in the state, which resulted in being named one of the safest communities in the country.  Shelby Township consistently had one of the lowest crime rates in the region while I was police chief.  Under my leadership, I was fiscally conservative, built up reserve funds of nearly $16 million dollars, and provided the means to build a new police station with no additional money from our taxpayers.  Personally, I am most proud of my wife of 33 years, Jean.  Together we have raised a beautiful family, having been blessed with very loving and successful children.

5. Is there one person who has been the most influential in your life? Who?

My wife has been most influential in my life.  She has always strongly supported me in all my endeavors and continually encourages me, especially through the most trying times.  We also rely on each other to stay strong in our Christian faith.

6. What are key ways you would have residents make a difference locally?

The key to a strong community is by local government building a strong trust and confidence factor with our residents.  The residents must have a voice. This is accomplished by encouraging our residents to voice their thoughts, ideas and opinions, and the board actually listening and acting on the issues for the betterment of our community, not special interests.

7. What do you like most about the Shelby Township community?

I enjoy the peace and serenity of the neighborhoods and our township’s country-like atmosphere in a metropolitan area.  My favorite spot is River Bends Park.  It is a beautiful park that offers many different amenities.

Matt you say you don't know $tathakis, well how come he knows you?He was the one at the Board meeting that gave you the nod to hold up the sign you had & then $tathaki$ claims he didn't see any sign.

Bill-- I was surprised to read your line, "I would think 'stranger dangers' would be in the paper". Do you read the local papers? Do you watch the local news? Do you read Patch.com or just post comments? What does being completely clueless about the string of "stranger dangers" say about you as an informed individual? And YOU may say, "it's the parents responsibility to keep the children safe", but the rest of the world appreciates what the Police do. I was pretty stealthy Mr. Delise. I don't think Mr. Stathakis even saw the sign. My objective was to stand up and speak with the sign in front of my face but the response even freaked me out and the lack of security outside the board room was frightening. I'm a pretty nervous guy at the meetings, public speaking is a true phobia of mine. If I had it to do all over again I would have sat in the front row on camera the whole time while people spoke at the podium and had signs for all of them. I would feel safer now with the audience camera and the re-educated security... maybe I will return some day.

Sorry, use my "alias". I better re=post as me so Mr. Delise doesn't freak out....lol. I was pretty stealthy Mr. Delise. I don't think Mr. Stathakis even saw the sign. Sit next to Turner. Your birds of a feather!
Ann jones July 19, 2012 at 05:48 PM
Who does Matt think he is fooling you were right there in the front row behind the podium! So much for the laws of decorum - HOGWASH! People are not allowed to clap or groan and get thrown out for such behavior but holding a sign slandering people is allowed. And he sAys he is not in Rick's pocket. Please we r not stupid. Also, Being our supervisor should be a full time job, you can't do that and have an insurance business. Oh and where is that business located in Warren! So much for supporting Shelby!!!
Matt Guarnieri July 19, 2012 at 07:13 PM
Who am I? I’m the only one cojones enough to stand up for the taxpayers in this township against crooks and cheats. I believe when you put money in your pocket at the expense of taxpayers it is corruption when you are elected to represent those taxpayers. Lisa Manzella is in a unique position to harm taxpayers she is sworn to represent while filling her pockets. Stating my beliefs is not slander. I sincerely believe what I say to be truthful and honest, Lisa Manzella has not denied the transaction took place and it was uncovered in an independent police investigation I had nothing to do with. I’m in no one’s pocket, I represent likeminded taxpayers. Mr. Stathakis has done nothing to harm my interest or that of all law abiding, honest taxpayers. In fact, he kept a cap on spending. Leman is suing me while asking for my vote to control my tax dollars….. This is asinine. Nightingale’s, the same thing. Manzella is, in my opinion corrupt because her actions in her occupation fit the definition of corruption. I hate public speaking and Lisa Manzella said I didn’t have the guts to show up at a meeting, so I did….. I did not bend of break any decorum rules, did you see me speak out of turn? Yell?.... NO, unlike some unscrupulous Nightingale’s I follow the rules.
Jeffery Berz July 19, 2012 at 07:19 PM
Stathakis doesn’t care about Shelby.
Jeffery Berz July 19, 2012 at 07:26 PM
You do however set the bar for stupidity. By sitting there with your signs you made a mockery of that whole meeting no matter which side you support. That was one of the craziest displays I have ever seen. The manner in which you held the signs and smiled and drooled only made you look worse than people envisioned you already. Now everyone knows who and what you are. Kind of like Trustee Flynn putting his picture on his campaign posters. Now everyone knows who he is and they won’t vote for him. He really did himself in with those picture signs! If you think that you did a good job representing Stathakis and trying to make Lisa Manzella look bad you’re wrong. People had the chance to se you for what you are. If anything you did Bob, Lisa and Nick a huge favor! Good Job.
Matt Guarnieri July 19, 2012 at 07:58 PM
Should have seen how uncomfortable Mr. Stathakis and Mr. Huth looked.... Lisa Manzella was laughing because she knows I actually work for her. Mrs. Manzella invited me to the meeting. Now what? I would be willing to look as stupid as I have to to save Shelby from these sue crazy fools.... what are you willing to do? Besides whine behind an anonymous profile and cry about me. I uped the game. I showed you me.... I'm the only honest one on here.
Jeffery Berz July 19, 2012 at 08:34 PM
I’m glad you have a "magic mirror on the wall” that tells you that you didn’t "look stupid".
Dana Horton July 22, 2012 at 03:46 PM
I agree with Lori. The corruption is happening right now with this current board. Do they think they’re invincible?
John Lang July 22, 2012 at 04:12 PM
I haven't figured the invincibility thing out yet. The blatant disregard exhibited by the current board can only be due to one of two things; either they know something that the rest of us don't, and somehow have the election in their back pocket, or know they are on the way out and don't really care what they do. The scorched earth thing. Gotta be either one or the other.
Pamela Adcox July 22, 2012 at 06:49 PM
Matt I did see you at the meeting. I was very proud to see you out of the house. The first step off mom's couch is always the hardest. Glad to see you there....although you were winded after walking up to the podium you and said nothing of real importance it is the fact you took up your civic duty and represented. Good work!
Matt Guarnieri July 23, 2012 at 11:54 AM
There is no invicibility. Mr. Stathakis has decided that protecting taxpayers from harm is his job, right to the end, not catering to special interest to gain votes. Will someone please point to the corruption, where are the police reports, the harm to the majority of taxpayers? If you want to claim the extra 10,000.00 (dollars) tax savings per taxpaying houshold over the last 4 years as corruption, I don't see how you could? Saving me and each of the homeowners on my street 10,000.00 (dollars) over the past year in taxes has earner the current board my loyalty. Again, please explain the corruption of the current board. The only real corruption I see is Mrs. Manzella putting money in her pocket and election campaign chest while bringing finanacial harm to Shelby Township. It's documented at "Lisa-Manzelle-Is-Corrupt,com" and I fully check each independently investigated fact of the corruption and dare anyone to point out a mistake.
Matt Guarnieri July 23, 2012 at 12:07 PM
Mrs. Adcox, I appreciate your support. Than you, but this particular post is about Robert Leman, the candidate and board of trustees. If I get the opportunity to write a post about myself and experience at board meetings again, I hope you will take the time then to input your praise of my courage and fortitude to speak up for the common taxpayers against the self serving special interest candidates that wish to cost all honest taxpayers dollars by suing us for their personal ignorance.
Pamela Adcox July 25, 2012 at 03:41 PM
Oops sorry Matt. You get slammed for your views so often I felt it necessary to give you a little praise. Best do it here because I highly doubt they will write an article about you. But your right....stick on topic. I support Bob Leman. I think the current board is shady at best.
Matt Guarnieri July 25, 2012 at 04:21 PM
But HOW are they shady? Leman was asked to cut expenses by 5%, he refused, the board gave him a second chance (one year extension) and Leman took a 7 month leave of absence to look for another job outside of Shelby Township, only when no one else would hire him (he had no place left to go) did he have a change of heart. Nightingales towing opperated illegally under Leman for years. Nightingales was removed, now Nightingales pays for and collects signatures for Leman to run for office..... how much shadier can you get. Please enlighten the taxpayer Ms. Adcox. (funny name by the way).
Dana Horton July 25, 2012 at 08:16 PM
Once again this is your opinion and your opinion only. You seem to have a one track mind.
Matt Guarnieri July 25, 2012 at 09:59 PM
Don't believe me Dana? Please email Mr. Leman and ask: Did he take an unscheduled leave of absence after the one year extension of his employment? Did Mr. Leman submit any cost saving ideas after being asked by the entire township board to do so, not just the supervisor? While on his leave of absence did Mr. Leman apply for more than one job position outside of Shelby Township, MI.? After not receiving an acceptable job offer did Mr. Leman then decide to stay in Shelby and sue the taxpayers? I could sit here all day and point out the facts to you, none based on my opinions, my opinions are based on the facts. What are your opinions based on Dana? Pie in the sky hope? I need facts, here are some links for you to read for yourself. I can promise you I did not make these documents up, I used FOIA to get every one. The petitions signatures collected mostly by John Nigtingale. http://www.scribd.com/doc/88035663/RobertLeman-Petitions The Weipert report on the illegality of the towing operation under Mr. Leman: http://www.scribd.com/doc/77063401/Russell-Weipert-Towing-Report-for-Shelby-Twp-Police Robert leman's reason's for none renewal of contract from before he decided to sue the taxpayers he wants to represent: http://www.scribd.com/doc/74338046/Rick-No-Chief A lawsuit against Robert Leman for sexual discrimination by one of the current candidates for trustee" http://www.scribd.com/doc/68813293/Leman-Complaint-and-Settlement-8-Pages
Matt Guarnieri July 25, 2012 at 10:03 PM
Here is the article about the Michigan State Police saying Robert Leman DID NOT over see how the Nightingale's handled Township property. http://www.candgnews.com/news/msp-report-towing-cites-%E2%80%98lack-oversight%E2%80%99-shelby-pd. My real opinion is that Robert Leman was in cahoots with John Nightingale to swindle taxpayers for years and this was very profitable for both of them. When they finally got caught both parties are throwing out made up misinformation to try and regain control of their profitable illegal operation. The evidence I present certainly and strongly supports my honest opinion more than yours.
Matt Guarnieri July 25, 2012 at 10:05 PM
Robert Leman was a crooked and corrupt police chief, and not an honest or honorable person... period.
Matt Guarnieri July 25, 2012 at 10:12 PM
You know what? I can't even find an email or contact information on either the Leman campaign site or his Facebook page, how is that for transparency? The candidate for Supervisor won't let you contact him by phone of email.... or at all. This is what you support Dana this is your transparency. http://www.facebook.com/BobLemanforSupervisor http://www.bobleman.com/ My personal favorite: "BobleMan.org"
John Lang July 25, 2012 at 10:41 PM
If the current Board somehow saved you and the homeowners on your street $10K each on your property tax, you must live on Martha's Vineyard or in Miami Beach. Not Shelby Township.
John Lang July 25, 2012 at 10:43 PM
I can give you some of that information, sir. You can reach Mr. Leman at Bob@bobleman.com. It's readily available and not that hard to figure out, really.
Dana Horton July 26, 2012 at 03:02 PM
I can e-mail or talk to Mr. Leman anytime I want. he gave us his cell phone number when he was out walking our neighborhood. How hard is it to look up BobLemanforSupervisor? How’s that for transparency? Just another idiotic attempt to make someone look bad. You must not know how to use your computer because you claim to investigate this and that but it always has the same results. Is there anyone that you do like? This is just a rhetorical question so I really don’t want you to answer. You have too many answers and I for one don’t care what you have to say. You are a disturbed person.
Dana Horton July 26, 2012 at 03:05 PM
It doesn’t really matter what you say. You have had so many negative things to say about so many people that nobody will believe a word you say anymore. You have done this to yourself. Every time you endorse someone you actually make them look bad by association with you. You are a cancer.
Dana Horton July 26, 2012 at 03:08 PM
What Mr. Leman does in his personal life is his business not mine or yours. I think that you are jealous.
Dana Horton July 26, 2012 at 03:14 PM
I have met Mrs. Manzella twice. I think she is a wonderful person with a big heart who truly cares about the people and our township. If she had done all of the things that you accuse her of she would have been in jail. This is my opinion. Please don’t feel obligated to tell me what she has done wrong in your tainted words. You cannot and will not change my vote. I will be voting for Mrs. Manzella for Treasurer on August 7th.
Dan Bartold August 07, 2012 at 02:39 AM
Wait a minute, I just noticed Mr. Leman has endorsed 5 candidates for Trustee. However, there are only 4 Trustee positions. Is he planning on making some changes...
