Property Owners To Pay $2.2 Million for New Sewer System Along Van Dyke

The Shelby Township Board of Trustees have approved a $2.2 million special assessment tax on property owners along Van Dyke between 22 and 21 mile roads to pay for a new sewer system to be built.

Property owners along Van Dyke Avenue from 22 Mile Road to just 1,000 feet south of 21 Mile Road will soon have the option to do away with an antiquated septic system, but will be on the hook for paying a more than $2.2 million special assessment roll.

The Shelby Township Board of Trustees approved a resolution Tuesday to move forward with the $2.3 million project to lay a sewer system along Van Dyke.

Once the work – which is expected to take about six months to complete – will allow property owners the option to hook into the sewer system.

During a public hearing, township officials said Shelby will pay $98,000 for the project, but the property owners - which are mostly commercial - will pay the remaining 2.2 million through the special assessment roll.

Shelby Township Deputy Assessor Tom Monchak said the largest assessment to a property along Van Dyke will be $120,000.  A lien will immediately be placed on the property if the owners refuse to pay their portion.  The first assessment will be due by July 2013.
