Rizzo Services will soon be hauling away Shelby Township’s trash.
The Sterling Heights-based waste and recycling company will replace Republic Services Inc., which has held the contract for 12 years, as the township’s single-hauler contractor for curbside trash, yard waste and recycling.
“Republic provided a great service for 15 years. You didn’t do anything wrong but we had a very competitive prices,” said Solid Waste and Recycling Committee representative and Shelby Board of Trustee Paula Filar, after representatives from Republic made one final plea in front of the Board to consider its offer. “It came down to the incentives and prices and I thank you for your service.”
Rizzo Services will begin collecting the township’s trash beginning July 1, 2012. The Township has entered into a three-year agreement, with the option to extend for another three years based on a fixed rate.
Rizzo Services was the lowest bidder, and has agreed to charge Shelby Township $13.08 a month, which is $1.93 lower than the current rate through the first year of the contract. The price will gradually increase, reaching $13.58 at the end of the three-year period.
Other terms of the agreement include:
- Residents can pay their trash bill a year in advance to receive one month free.
- Residents will receive a new 95-gallon recycling bin that has wheels and a cover. The trash bins will not be replaced.
- Rizzo offers a recycling incentive award that involves coupons for local merchants and national brand products.
- Senior citizens will receive a 10 percent discount.
The Shelby Township Solid Waste and Recycling Committee consulted with nearby cities that already use Rizzo Services such as Rochester, Chesterfield Township and Royal Oak, and all have said they were satisfied with the services provided.
