Robotic Company To Get Tax Breaks; Police Get New Cameras

The Shelby Township Board of Trustees approved every agenda item at Tuesday night's meeting.

Board Approves Kuka Robotics Tax Breaks, Rezoning For New Building

The Shelby Township Board of Trustees has cleared the way for Kuka Robotics to make an empty 80,000-square foot building in the township the home of its new North American headquarters.

After a brief public hearing and a presentation from the U.S. subsidiary of Kuka Robotics president Stuart Shepherd, the Shelby Township Board of Trustees approved his request for an Industrial Facilities Exemption Certificate.

In addition, the Board approved GS Roussillon LLC's request to establish an Industrial Development District. GS Roussillon is the owner of the currently empty and unfinished building on 51870 Shelby Parkway that Kuka Robotics plans to move in to.

Board Approves Transfer of Entertainment Permit Stock; Transfer Ownership of Entertainment Permit

The Board has approved the transfer of stock in the 2011 Class C Licensed Business, located at 55161 Shelby Township (Shawn Patrick’s). Fifty shares of the stock will be transferred from William Jesse Proper to Nicholas McDonald.

The transfer of the stock was the first step to pave the way for the transfer of ownership of the 2011 Class C Licensed Business with entertainment permit from 2002 Andrea Inc. to Steiny’s Restaurant.

The second request was also approved by the board.

Section 30 Drainage Project May Need Another Easement

The Shelby Township Planning and Zoning director’s requests to accept responsibility for the relocation of the Section 30 drain located on Ryan Road right of way was approved.

The Section 30 Drainage Project is the installation of a drainage outlet from two of the existing lakes in the township. 

During the preparation of the final engineering plans, the township discovered that the need for one more easement along Ryan Road may be needed. The cost of the easement would be $45,000.

There are no relocation plans at this moment, but the board approved to allow the Planning and Zoning Department handle the matter should the easement be needed.

The Section 30 Drainage project is a Community Development Block Grant funded project.

Modifications to Consent Judgment on Behalf of Township and Hallmark Development Co. to be Revisited

The township will revisit a consent judgment that was approved in 1998 involving multiple parties and the development of 65 acres of land on the northeast corner of 22 Mile Road and the M-53 Freeway.

The consent judgment had two main components; expand Shelby West Mobile Home Community and the transfer of 34 acres of land to Shelby Township to build a recreation park.

The township was recently approached by U.S. Farathane Corporation, which owns property along the northern boundary of the area covered by the 1998 consent agreement. The company currently owns an 84,000-square foot building and is contemplating an expansion, but it would need to purchase a part of the park.

The matter will be sent back to the Planning and Zoning Department. 

Budget for Road Projects in 2012, 2013 and 2014 Approved

The Shelby Township Board of Trustees approved a road construction budget for 2012, 2013, and 2014.

Shelby Township and Macomb County Department of Roads would each pay 20 percent of the cost of the project. The federal government will pay for the remaining 80 percent.

The projects include:

  • Auburn Road Construction Project, which includes Dequindre Road to Ryan Road. It will cost the township $220,000.
  • Van Dyke Widening Project, from 25 Mile to 26 Mile roads, will cost the township $447,821.
  • 25 Mile Reconstruction Project, from Mound Road to Van Dyke Avenue will cost the township $220,000.

Shelby Police to Get New In-Car Camera Systems

The Shelby Township Police Department will spend $144,000 to purchase and install new in-car camera systems in all of its 25 patrol vehicles.

After researching several cameras, the police department said it decided to go with the Panasonic Arbitrator 360.

Two grants will pay for more than $46,000, the rest of the funds for the camera will be paid for by drug forfeiture money, which is money only the police department can spend. 

Company Awarded Sidewalk Contract

The Farnesse Contractors Inc. was awarded a $41,891 contract to correct sidewalk gaps and make sidewalk improvements.
