Senior Lunch Program Continues Through Donations

Crank's Catering announced it will provide complimentary Friday lunches at the Shelby Township Senior Center after the popular meal service was curtailed following federal sequestration cuts.

Friday lunches have continued at the Shelby Township Senior Center through the generosity of local officials and businesses following cuts caused by the federal sequestration.

Shelby Township Clerk Stanley Grot initially sponsored complimentary lunches to seniors in April, with other local businesses providing meals for seniors in the following weeks.

This past Friday, Crank’s Catering provided a lunch of barbecue chicken, spaghetti, mashed potatoes and green beans.

“I am extremely pleased to see the private sector step in to provide services where the government no longer is able,” said Clerk Stanley Grot, in a release. “Thank you to Crank’s Catering for serving as a positive example for other business owners to follow.”

The Friday lunches at the center were cut after the Area Agency on Aging 1-B lost over 4 percent of its funding due to the federal sequester, which impacted the nutrition program which includes Meals on Wheels and the congregate meals at the center.

The center is able to provide hot meals at the center for four days during the week. But due to the federal cuts, the Friday reduced lunches were discontinued.

“When Clerk Grot told me that senior citizens were no longer receiving lunch on Friday, it broke my heart” said Jeff Crank, owner of Crank’s Catering, in a release.

It was announced Friday that Crank will provide complimentary lunch to Shelby seniors once per month for the next 12 months.

“A heart‐feltthank you goes out to good people such as Jeff Crank, who cares about the community he does business in” Grot said.
