Shelby To Further Discuss 41A Court Move at Public Work Session

Language needs to be revised, Supervisor vows issue will go before voters.

The Shelby Township Board of Trustees decided at Tuesday's Board of Trustees meeting that by attorney Robert Huth about financing a new 41A District Court building should be revised before it's placed on the Feb. 28, 2012 election ballot.

A work session is set for Dec. 8 at 11:30 a.m. inside the Township hall to further discuss the language. The public is welcome to attend.

The proposed language states: “Do you support the Shelby Township Board of Trustees securing funds by allocation from the general fund, selling bonds, and/or authorizing tax revenues, to support the design and construction of a new District Court Building in Shelby Township?”

Some board members and the public thought the language was vague and important information including the construction costs; if general fund money should be used and if taxes should be raised to finance the consturuction of sale of the courthouse, should be included in the language. Huth said he wrote the language as a "starting point" for discussion of the project.

The current court building is 33 years old and Supervisor Rick Stathakis said the township is running the facility to the ground. He added that the issue needs to go before voters and pledged to have some sort of language about the project for the February ballot.

Some residents suggested the township should consider combining the 41A District Court with a new fire department building.
