Shelby Township Congressman Considers Run for Carl Levin's Senate Seat

Rep. Pete Lund, who represents Shelby Township in the Michigan House, is one of several Republicans reportedly eyeing Democrat Carl Levin's U.S. Senate seat.

On March 8, Lund told POLITICO that he would consider a run for the Senate seat that Levin recently announced that he would vacate in 2014.

"My preference would be Candice Miller run,” Lund told the website. “Candice is my congressman….she’d be a great senator. But if she doesn’t, I’m not saying I’m going to run but I’m not ruling it out at this point."

Miller, who represents Michigan's 10th congressional district, including Shelby Township and Utica, has stated that she does not plan to run for the seat.

Lund has served since 2008 as the representative for Michigan's 36th District, which includes parts of Shelby Township. He is currently the House Majority Whip.

In an automated survey of 1,170 likely Republican voters conducted Monday, 2.05 percent of respondents said they would support Lund for the GOP nomination to the senate seat, according to a news release from Murray Communications-Portable Insights-Combat Data, which conducted the poll.

U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers found support among 31.11 percent of respondents, with Scott Romney, the brother of presidential candidate Mitt Romney, receiving 29.74 percent of the votes. The margin of error in the poll was 2.86 percent.

"Obviously the earth is still cooling from Senator Levin’s announcement, and the Republican field is not set. But this poll shows us who begins this race from a relative position of strength and who has a bit of a hill to climb," said Brian Bellgowan of Combat Data, in a statement.
