Shelby Township Residents to See Hike in Water and Sewer Bills

Despite tapping into a $40 million water and sewage surplus fund to pay for an increase in services, residents will see bill hikes in 2012.

Shelby Township residents once again will see an increase in water rates.

The Shelby Township Board of Trustees last week approved an 8.7-percent hike in water rates, and 9.9-percent increase for sanitary sewer service, according to the Macomb Daily.

Effective Jan. 1, 2012, a family that uses 7,500 gallons of water and sewer per month would see their quarterly bills rise about $18, the paper reported.

This marks the third straight year of an increase.

"We're trying to keep our costs down through this period until we can level out where the combination of Detroit's increase and our costs are legitimately under 10 percent," .
