Each year about 700,000 Americans have a new or repeat stroke, a leading cause of death and disability. After a stroke, patients and their families can benefit from education and support services to help them adjust to lifestyle changes.

Beaumont Health System invites stroke survivors, families, caregivers and friends to learn about life after stroke at its third annual community stroke conference. “Life After Stroke … Journey to Recovery,” will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at the Best Western Sterling Inn, 34911 Van Dyke Ave. in Sterling Heights. Registration is $10 per person and includes lunch, exhibits and all workshops.

Esther Young, D.O., neurologist and stroke director, Beaumont Hospital, Troy, will discuss why it is important to seek immediate medical attention if one is having difficulty walking, talking, reaching, seeing or feeling. She’ll also explain causes of stroke and treatments.

Says Dr. Young, “Don’t ignore the signs. The quicker a patient seeks medical attention the better the outcome. If you suspect a stroke, don’t drive yourself or a family member to the hospital emergency center, call 911.”

Conference speakers will also discuss interventions; rehabilitation therapies; prevention; risk factors; recovery services and survivor stories.

Call Beaumont’s Referral & Scheduling Center toll-free at 800-633-7377 by Sept. 12 to reserve a seat. Online registration is also available at https://classes.beaumont.edu/. Space is limited.
