UCS English as a Second Language Program Grows; Moves to New Location

Utica Community Schools English as a Second Language Program has grown so big it has to move to a new location in Sterling Heights.

The Utica Community Schools adult English as a Second Language program will have a new home come September.

The Community Education Department will move into the Walsh Community Education facility in Sterling Heights. UCS said the move will make it possible to meet the program's growing needs. More than 700 adults, ages 19 and up, have learned to read and write English from the UCS program.

The English as a Second Language program offers a full range of services to area residents through its certified teaching staff: language skills, life skills, a structured technology course and assistance in securing citizenship and employment.

"We make sure that our clients are successful in becoming part of our community," said Mary Philemon, the English as a Second Language Facilitator for community education. "We test our students to ensure they are making progress and reach their goals."

Community Education offers five different levels for ESL students, depending on their proficiency when they first enter the program. Students are placed in the different levels until they master independent language and life skills.
