Vote Now: Help Shelby Twp. Student Win $10K Scholarship Contest

Voting for the #mi2020 college scholarship competition kicks off.

A Shelby Township student needs your help to win a $10,000 scholarship for college.

Brianna R of Shelby Township is one of 55 Michigan students who qualified as a semi-finalist for the #mi2020 scholarship contest by submitting a video explaining the importance of investing in a higher education, and how the Michigan 2020 Plan to offer free college tuition to all students is the right investment for Michigan to make.

In the video, which does not use the student's full name, Brianna says, "A scholarship would be a helpful thing that would me to get a good degree, get a good job and that would help the economy."

The scholarship is worth one year of tuition, up to $10,000, at any of Michigan’s community colleges or public universities.

The scholarship was created to promote the Democrat-backed plan called "," which would provide free in-state college tuition for every Michigan student.

The college affordability plan would give each graduate of a Michigan high school an education grant of approximately $9,500 each year for in-state university or community college tuition. The estimated $1.8 billion proposal would be funded by putting a term limit on corporate tax credits and charging state sales tax to online retailers.

The video competition is one part social media marketing, one part crowd-sourcing, and an attempt to rally students and their parents around the Democrats' legislative agenda.
