Whiz Kid Blake Sanborn Has Heart

Malow seventh-grader revels in helping others and aspires to be a cardiologist.

Whiz Kid: Blake Sanborn

Age: 13

Accomplishments: Blake Sanborn has a big heart. The student is a member of the Builders Club, a club for students who want to make a difference in their school and community. His classmates voted him treasurer of the club and he has led the group in making heart-shaped pillows for patients who are recovering from heart surgery. Blake had heart surgery when he was younger and this was something he could do to help patients who are going through the same thing he went through.

Sanborn is also looking to volunteer at one of Beaumont Hospital's Healthy Heart Check programs. Blake himself has the tests that the program administers annually and he aspires to be a cardiologist.

"Blake is very mature for his age and is excelling in all of his classes," Malow teacher Melissa Thornton said. "He is always thinking of others. Recently he volunteered to help his friend with her math once he heard she was having difficulties in that area. He gave up his own time after school to tutor her."
