Desiree Davila to Start Gopher the Gold Race

Boston Marathon runner-up will serve as honorary starter for races at Riverbends Park on July 23.

Professional distance runner Desiree Davila will serve as the honorary starter for the races today at Riverbends Park in Shelby Township.

Davila runs with the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project and she is the top female American marathoner.

She finished second at the Boston Marathon in April, finishing with a time of 2:22:38—the fastest mark ever by an American female at the event.

Davila is a graduate of Arizona State, and she lives in Rochester Hills.

There will be a 10K, 5K and a kids’ fun run. Registration begins at 8 a.m., and the 5K and 10K races start at 9 a.m.The fun run begins at 10:15 a.m.

Shelby Township Biggby Coffee Store owner, Dave Danyko, will provide fresh brewed coffee to all those in attendance as well as a live DJ to add to the fun!

The sixth annual race benefits Macomb County Special Olympics and raised more than $6,000 with more than 300 participants last year.
