Ike's Myers Has Strong Showing, Lady Hoops Teams Wrap Up Season In Districts

Utica fares well at bowling finals and boys basketball teams begin state tourney.

It’s a crazy-busy stretch here for the Pick of the Week staff, with all kinds of playoffs under way and a slew of seasons coming to an end. 

That said, it’s also a very exciting time for prep sports fans. 

With that in mind, let’s take our weekly look back at the week that was, and check out the week that lies ahead.

  • Kudos to Ike wresting sensation , who competed hard at the state wrestling finals this past weekend, wrapping up the event in seventh place.
  • The girls hoops squads from Utica and Ike bowed out of the state tourney in districts this past week. The Chieftains fell to Ford II in the opener, 62-56, while , 59-54 in the district final.
  • The season also came to a close for the hockey squads from both Utica High and Ike. The Eagles were ousted by eventual regional champion Lake Orion, 10-2. Utica saw its season come to a close thanks to Rochester Hills Stoney Creek, 8-0.
  • Utica’s was on a roll this past weekend at the individual state bowling finals. Mazza advanced to the state quarterfinals. The boys team made the cut at the state finals, but was defeated in the quarters by Westland John Glenn, 1266-1261.

A Look Ahead

  • The boys basketball teams take aim at a district title this week, with both squads competing at Utica Ford II High. Both Ike and Utica drew first-round byes, meaning they don’t get the tourney started until March 9. The Eagles will play either Stevenson or Ford II, while the Chieftains await the winner of the Chippewa Valley/Sterling Heights contest.
