Utica's Thompson Shines at AAU Tournament

Pick of the Week pleads with Mother Nature and offers fans some suggestions for the week ahead in high school sports.

Dear Mother Nature,

This crazy-weather-thing you’ve got going on here in Michigan isn’t funny anymore.

It’s making our job here at the Pick of the Week pretty difficult.

Fields are flooded, fans are frozen in the stands, and games are getting canceled left and right.

If you could, please wave your wand, wrinkle your nose or place an order with the sun (whatever it is you have to do), and send some spring-like weather our way.

This is getting ridiculous.

Sincerely,

John

Well fans, I hope that does some good.

Either way, we’ll continue to press on here and look at the week ahead, fingers crossed that the weather turns the corner and into something that resembles spring here in the mitten-shaped state.

Let’s begin by sending kudos out to hoops superstar , who continued to flex his basketball muscle against top-notch competition at the prestigious AAU Storm Classic tournament in Grand Rapids last weekend.

Thompson earned tourney MVP honors en route to his team, Team Detroit, winning the event.

Awesome job, Andrew.

Also, hats off to the girls soccer team who to climb to the top of the Macomb Area Conference Red.

Now, here’s a brief look at some of the more enticing matchups this week:

  • The boys golf teams from Utica and Ike travel to Romeo Golf Club for one of the season’s more prestigious tournaments, the Evans-Gill. Top teams from all over the area compete. The event begins at 8 a.m.
  • Utica’s girls tennis team hosts MAC Gold Division-leading Sterling Heights on Wednesday beginning at 4:30 p.m.
  • Ike’s softball squad hosts a very talented Lake Shore High on Wednesday. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
