VIDEO: 'Street Battle' Breaks Out at Carnival

A group of talented teenagers wowed a crowd Friday night at the Sterling Heights carnival with their dance moves.

While waiting in line for the Pirate Ship ride at the on Friday evening I saw a large crowd begin to form and a lot of commotion.

Being the nosy reporter that I am, I pushed my way to the front of the crowd to find out what the fuss was about. To my pleasant surprise, I found a few teenagers “Street Battling.”

“Street Battle” is usually improvisational dance. Dancers usually try to invoke each other to come to the center of the circle and show off their dance moves by trying to out dance each other and interact with the crowd.

Although I was probably the oldest person in the crowd (most were high school students), I really enjoyed the free form dancing.

The teen dancers put on a on a good show for the growing crowd.

One street dancer told me he dances to impress the ladies. I think it’s really cool the teenage boys are getting attention with the talents and not by turning to violence.

The carnival is at the Sterling Center Shopping Center on the west side of Schoenherr Road, just south of Hall Road.

The carnival will reopen for the last weekend on May 19 and run through May 22.

A $20 armband will give you unlimited access to all fair rides for a whole day and night. The fair will be open at 4 p.m. Thursdays and Friday, noon on Saturdays and 1 p.m. Sundays.

Clean restrooms are available at the Heritage Church, which is located behind the fair. The church will also have free inflatables for children and a free concert in the parking lot May 20 at 7 p.m.
