Summer Camp With a Message Comes To Shelby Township

Shepherd's Gate Church is holding a summer camp with a message for cross-section of the community this week in Shelby Township.

Nature programs with a turtle, a game of modified dodgeball and taking a ride down the water slide were just some of the after-lunch activities Tuesday for participants who took part in at the SpringHill summer camp at Shepherd's Gate Church in Shelby Township.

This is the third year SpringHill has offered their week-long summer camp -  which is a mix of traditional summer activities and educational offerings in a faith-based program - at Shepherd's Gate.

It has grown in popularity to expand to St. Peter Lutheran Church in Macomb Township. The camp had 250 children attend.

At Shepherd's Gate, there are about 220 kids who are taking part in the week-long program. This includes more than 25 students from the foster care system who received scholarships to experience the camp.

John Kral, children's director at the church, said he wanted to bring "something different" to Shelby Township and "give kids a camp experience" in the community.

For more information about the program, which still has drop-in opportunities, contact Shepherd's Gate at (586) 731-4544.
