Monfort student goes to bat for Jackie Robinson competition

Monfort sixth-grader Julia Meguid earns top prize in essay portion of 17th annual Jackie Robinson Art, Essay & Poetry contest

Julia Meguid, a 6th grader at Monfort Elementary, was honored during a special pre-game ceremony before the Tigers game on April 23 for her entry in the 17th annual Jackie Robinson Art, Essay & Poetry Contest.

Tigers right fielder Torii Hunter personally congratulated Meguid and five other winners on their work. Students entered the contest by submitting an original essay, poem, or work of art in honor of Jackie Robinson.

The poem submitted by Meguid captured the spirit of Jackie Robinson's nine values of success - Courage, Determination, Teamwork, Persistence, Integrity, Citizenship, Justice, Commitment, and Excellence.

This is the second straight year a Monfort student has had a winning entry in this contest.
