Switzer Elementary students celebrate America

Switzer musical program celebrates American democracy, culture and traditions

third graders paid tribute to our nation at two stirring afternoon and evening presentations for family and fellow students recently.

Under direction of music teacher Nancy Cannava, the students sang and danced in celebration of our American democracy, culture and traditions, as well as honoring the dedicated men and women who serve in our armed forces.

Special guest speaker was Staff Sergeant Jason Sears, a 17-year U.S. Army veteran who recently returned from deployment in Afghanistan. SSG Sears talked to the students about his work to teach and train Afghan soldiers so the people can be free to improve their lives and be able to send their children to school.

He stressed the Army’s code of LDRSHIP, which stands for Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity and Professionalism. He encouraged the Switzer students – including his own niece and nephew, Luke and Allison Drzewiecki – to practice doing the right thing, especially when no one is looking!

The third graders danced a Virginia reel and a country line dance and sang selections that included “Salute to America,” “Blue and Red and White,” “American Tears” and “Lights of Freedom.”

The presentation closed with a colorful slideshow of the students' drawings depicting their interpretations of “America the Beautiful.”
