newspaper editor Lindsay Spagnuolo has been named one of the state's top student journalists.
Spagnuolo was selected to the 2012 All State Journalism staff by the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA). It is one of nearly ten awards she earned at the state competition in Lansing on April 17.
"Lindsay has seen her work published in not one, but two professional newspapers, is a writer for our local online "information platform," and contributes stories and graphics to our school district’s online website," UHS Student Publications Advisory Stacy Smale said. "She’s handled a tough, emotional interview with a football player after a near-death experience, dug for the truth behind an animal activist group picketing a local pet store, and has even landed interviews with the rich and famous, including members of the teen pop band All Star Weekend and a Super Bowl champion."
Selection for the special journalism staff was based on submission of a detailed portfolio including: letters of recommendation, a resume, clips of work and a personal essay.
In addition to the being named to the All Journalism staff, Spagnuolo also earned eight individual awards. The awards include:
- First Place: Front Page/Newspaper Style and Professionally Published Page
- Second Place: Information Graphic
- Third Place: Personality Profile
- Honorable Mention: News Analysis, Editorial Writing, Pro/Con Editorial Column and In-Depth Feature
Spagnuolo also won a Sparty award at MIPA's summer journalism camp, ranking her as the best in her class in graphic design.
