Utica High School publications earn top state and national awards

2012 Arrow and Warrior rank among best in student publications

Utica High School publications have earned three top national and state awards that recognize the best in student journalism.

The Warrior student yearbook earned honors from the Columbia Press Association and the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA), and the Arrow newspaper was honored by the National Scholastic Press Association.

The Warrior’s Gold Award from the Columbia Press Association is based on a written set of standards developed by the association to reflect best practices for student media in concept, coverage, writing and design.

"Your coverage (both of students and school life) is outstanding," evaluators wrote of the edition. "It was a pleasure reading this book and I'm sure your school is proud of it."

The Columbia Press Association is a division of Columbia University in New York.

The 2012 Warrior also earned the Spartan Award from MIPA, based on its theme, coverage, writing, design, photography, and services to its reader.

The Warrior is one of only 10 yearbooks in the MIPA Hall of Fame as a result of its continued track record of excellence.

In addition yearbook honors, the UHS student newspaper Arrow received an All American Award from the National Scholastic Press Association.

The award, the highest honor for a student newspaper, is awarded to only about five percent of the entries.

"Your coverage and content are truly amazing," wrote a reviewer. "I was not surprised to read the article on your publications taking first place in the state."

UHS student publications are under the direction of adviser Stacy Smale.
