Young UCS orators speak out
Six students honored by Optimist International for their speech on "Why My Voice is Important."
Six UCS students have been honored by the Shelby Township Optimist Club for finding their voice.
The six were among the 25 students participating in the Optimist International Oratorical Contest. Students wrote a 4-5 minute speech on the topic, “Why My Voice is Important."

Girls
- 1st place- Sienna Schulz, Monfort Elementary
- 2nd place - Jillian Jezek, Monfort Elementary
- 3rd place - Nida Ashraf, Stevenson High School

Boys:
- 1st place - Aaron Keys, Monfort Elementary
- 2nd place - Liam Smith, Monfort Elementary
- 3rd place - Cameron Farnum, Monfort Elementary
The Shelby Township Area Optimist Club presented certificates to all participants. Winners received medallions and cash prizes.
The two first place winners will advance on to a regional contest and the winners of that contest, then advance to the District competition where they compete for a $2,500.00 scholarship.
Since its start in 1928, the Oratorical contest has become the longest-running program sponsored by Optimist International. The contest is designed for youth to gain experience in public speaking and provide them with the opportunity to compete for a college scholarship.
