Education and dedication score big when Red Wings reps visit West Utica

Students at West Utica Elementary took part in an action-packed assembly last week presented by the Detroit Red Wings Foundation.

Themed around the values of “education and dedication,” the program aimed to encourage the importance of education, healthy eating and exercise while introducing the children to the game of hockey.

The students learned fun facts about Detroit’s favorite NHL team and each received a Red Wings folder and growth chart. Some even earned prizes during a hockey and health-themed quiz; although most were stumped when asked how many Stanley Cup championships Detroit has won (answer is below).

In addition, West Utica received floor hockey equipment, including goalie gear and nets, courtesy of the Red Wings Foundation. The items were given a workout during an exciting shootout between a team of students and a team of teachers.

Wings Foundation representatives Zach Konnie, Tiffany Kress and Sara Turnbull stressed to the students how education and dedication can lead to success, whether you are a fifth grader or a Red Wings star like Henrik Zetterberg or Jimmy Howard.

“It was a fun day for everyone,” said principal Brad Suggs. “The Red Wings’ encouraging messages affirmed what we teach our students every day.”

Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan and Kroger team up with the Red Wings Foundation to bring the positive program to schools in Metro Detroit.

(So far, the Red Wings have won 11 Stanley Cups and counting.)
