Ike yearbook editor named Michigan's best

Eisenhower High School senior Lindsay Moore has been been named Michigan's top yearbook editor and among the 15 best student journalists in the state.

At the spring MIPA award ceremony, Moore was honored as a member of the 2013 student journalist staff, which is a select group of 15 highly-ranked journalists in Michigan. She also earned the All-MIPA Yearbook award, making Moore the top high school yearbook student in the state of Michigan.

To earn that, Moore gathered all her best work and personal letters of recommendation to submit a complete portfolio. The portfolio, which was themed 360°, represents how Moore has become a well-rounded journalist by being on both the yearbook and newspaper staffs.

“It is such a huge honor because I’ve been doing journalism for three years, and especially to be honored at the state level was incredible,” Moore said. “To have three years of work paid off was a very proud and exciting moment for me.”

When Moore entered high school, she found her voice through journalism. Publications adviser Erica Kincannon helped Moore realize she had a natural talent for journalism and encouraged her to continue it throughout her high school career.

“I quickly recognized Lindsay was unique, from the way she confidently carried herself and spoke with her peers, to the way she jumped on assignments with vigor and ease,” Kincannon said. “Lindsay absorbed every writing tip she received like a sponge and her stories truly captured the essence of the subject.”

By Moore’s junior year, she earned the title of Associate Editor of the yearbook and by senior year she achieved Editor-in-Chief. Each year Moore consistently improved, helping her build an award-winning portfolio.

“I don’t ever recall Lindsay asking questions; she just always did what needed to be done, and better than anyone else,” Kincannon said. “Lindsay sets her eyes on a goal and her determination drives her to achieve it.”

Moore’s commitment isn’t over. With awards in hand, Moore prepares for the next chapter of her life at Indiana University. She is a direct admit to the School of Journalism and a media scholar of a select group of 12 - 15 students, allowing her first priority to certain classes and access to off-campus journalistic experiences.

Moore is ready for the future and also thankful for what the past three years have taught her.

“Despite all the awards, I am most proud of how I’ve grown into myself, not necessarily through journalism but from what journalism has given me,” Moore said. “Before yearbook I wasn’t really a leader or a star athlete. Journalism has given me a niche and allowed me to become the person I am today.”
