Malow students take the pledge

More than 160 student leaders were inducted into the Malow Junior High National Honor Society on May 13, 2014.

The ceremony included a candlelit induction where the 168 new members pledged to uphold the high purposes of the National Junior Honor Society, promising to stay true to the principles of Scholarship, Service, Leadership, Citizenship and Character. The Malow chapter began in 2010.

The executive board led by president Brooke Coleman, vice president Gabriella Borbolla, secretary Julia Tripi, treasurer Sarah Wojcik and historian Madylen Zweng demonstrated remarkable leadership under adviser Michelle Witt.

This year the chapter raised $1,000 for breast cancer research, $1,500 for Family Youth Intervention and more than $2,000 for Grace Centers of Hope. In addition, the members provided tutoring support after school and during lunches at Malow, a 5K run to support foster kids, a Relay for Life for cancer research and supported Malow feeder schools with community outreach.

On June 7, the NJHS participated in two cleanup opportunities. The first was an Adopt-a-Road program in which the members secured a road and committed to maintaining it twice a year. The adopted roadway is along Van Dyke between 26 and 27 Mile roads, where the chapter sign is displayed with pride.

The other cleanup was at Malow Junior High. Thanks to assistance from Commissioner James Carabelli, United Landscaping and Dawn Surma of Stonescape Supply, the students were able to add perennials and a tree to beautify the Malow grounds.
