National Hour of Code event gets UCS students with the programming

Students from across Utica Community Schools were able to get with the program by taking part in the national "Hour of Code" event.

Elementary students were able to learn some basic programming skills through an historic event held in conjunction with Computer Science Education week.

The Hour of Code program attempted to set a world record by getting 10 million students across the country to take part in video tutorials at code.org.

"The site walks students through basic computer programming skills; building on their knowledge, allowing them to fail and persevere, and getting them thinking about the specific actions that need to be performed for a desired outcome," said West Utica Research Center Teacher Julie Burgett.

At Burr Elementary, first and second graders programmed a puppy to do different tasks. Upper elementary students programmed movement of characters in an angry bird type scenario.

"It was a fun and mind broadening adventure for kids with real world career ties," Media Center teacher Helena Foust said.

At West Utica, students in 3rd-6th grades took part in lesson prior to the event to learn more about the event a typical programmer's environment.
During the hour, the media center was set up to look like an office slace.

"My goals were to introduce students to basic computer programming skills, show them the career diversity coding offers, and that anyone can do it," Burgett said. "And of course for them to have fun!"
