Unique program catches Beck students on the run

Beck Centennial Elementary is proud to be the first chapter in Utica Community Schools to have the Girls on the Run program.

Girls on the Run, an affiliate program of the YMCA of Metro Detroit, is an after school program that uses the power of running to help prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living.

Through interactive activities such as running, playing games, and discussing important issues, the 20 Beck students learn to celebrate being girls. The program focuses on building self-esteem and improving emotional health.

During the 10-week program, girls meet twice per week to learn about specific life lessons, such as dealing with body image, resisting peer pressure, making healthy decisions, and contributing to the community.
Each session is led by trained female coaches that guide and mentor girls through a fun and uplifting curriculum.

One component of the program focuses on community service. Beck Girls on the Run made holiday cards to send to soldiers overseas.

Along the way, the girls train together to run or walk a 5K event. This 5K event took place, at Kensington Metro Park, on November 17th. Every Beck girl finished with some students running the entire distance!
