17 Ways to Honor Earth Day

Taking care of the environment doesn't need to be overwhelming. Here are some easy ways for your family to save money and celebrate Earth Day by going green.

Monday marks the celebration of Earth Day, which was founded in 1970 by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson. Nelson was inspired in part by the anti-Vietnam war protests and wanted to inspire a similar level of activism against environmental destruction. Since then, Earth Day has become a global event that has raised awareness of many environmental issues including deforestation and global warming. In honor of Earth Day, here is a list of 17 things you and your family can do in Shelby Township and Utica that will help the environment and often save money in the process.  1. Bring your own bags when you go grocery shopping. 2. Have your kids make their friends’ birthday cards and bring gift in decorated paper bags or a cool reusable bag. Kids …

Until We Meet Again, Shelby-Utica Patch

This is Local Editor Jenny Whalen signing off.

I'm terrible at goodbyes. I always have been. I refuse to buy souvenirs because to me, it signifies that I may never return to that particular vacation spot. I'm still in denial that Bill Knapp's no longer exists and there's a slight possibility that I never ended my long-distance relationship. Sorry, honey. So it is with a heavy heart (and no little sense of disbelief) that I type this, my final post for Patch.com. A little over two years ago, Patch expanded its coverage territory to Michigan and I had the pleasure of launching a community news website for Macomb Township. Seven months ago, I was given the opportunity to bring that coverage to my native Clinton Township and in January, I joined the team managing Shelby-Utica Patch as well…

What Qualities Would You Like to See in the Next Pope?

Pope Benedict XVI will retire Thursday, and the process to select his successor will begin.

At 8 p.m. Thursday in Rome (2 p.m. in Shelby Township and Utica), Pope Benedict XVI will become the first pope in more than 600 years to retire.  The cardinals of the Roman Catholic church are currently meeting in Rome this week to bid farewell to Pope Benedict as well as to decide when the conclave will begin to elect the next pope. The church has said it plans to have a new pope in place before Easter on March 31. Speculation has already started on who might be the next pope, but most sources say an American pope is unlikely, despite approximately one-fourth of the U.S. population describing itself as Catholic, according to a recent study by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life. In Shelby Township and Utica there is a fairly large …

agree with you on priority to be weeding out of pedophiles and I assume that is mostly already done here in the US. at least I hope that is complete. not too sure about the idea of a gay african cardinal however. I think the next cardinal will come from Brazil or Argentina as geo-politically the largest base of catholics are in South America. Forgot his name but Cardinal from Sao Paolo seems to …   more ›

After Duct-Taped Van Dies, Patch's Car-Shopping Mom Finally Gets a New Ride

Patch readers will remember Angela Youngblood from her "Patch Drives" test-driving series last year. Read about her new vehicle — and about how her big, old van turned into a teachable moment for her whole family.

Editor's note: Rochester mom Angela Youngblood chronicled her car-shopping adventure across Oakland and Macomb counties last year for a series we called Patch Drives. Patch readers went along as Youngblood test drove a Honda Odyssey, Ford Flex, MINI Cooper, Chevy Suburban, Dodge Journey and Chrysler Town & Country. Here is the long-awaited ending to her research and travels. Last spring, I was van shopping.  I was searching for the right fit for our family.  You all went along for the ride while I tried out different SUVs, minivans and even a MINI Cooper. Eight long months have passed and I finally got my new ride. Let me back up a bit.  Since we last talked, the van has been falling apart little by little, sort of like my pride.  After …

I love this story! The musical references made me smile. I so miss my old duct taped Escort Wagon ( the old grocery getter ). I actually DID sleep in mine a few times in Nevada I think.....just about the time I gave up on affordable hotels in L.V. and about an hour out of town when I was sure those lights in the distance meant an approaching hotel. Little did I know, it was just a mirage :)... …   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Utica Mayor Urges State to Invest in Road Repair, Public Transit

"The Michigan Legislature has the opportunity to support Gov. Snyder’s transportation funding proposal for road and bridge repairs and improvements and public transit," writes Jacqueline Noonan.

Dear Editor, Across Michigan, leading business organizations and government leaders are urging the Legislature to approve Gov. Rick Snyder’s proposal to fix the state’s crumbling transportation system. While Michigan’s roads and bridges continue to deteriorate and are among the nation’s worst, other states are investing in road and bridge repairs and public transit options. These investments are generating thousands of jobs and billions in commercial and residential development, including new retail shops, grocery stores, shopping centers, art districts, office and apartment buildings, restaurants, cafes and more. The Michigan Legislature has the opportunity to support Gov. Snyder’s transportation funding proposal for road and bridge …

Should Utica High School Drop Chieftains as its Nickname?

The Michigan Department of Civil Rights filed a complaint that American Indian nicknames—such as the Chieftains—harm students education and should be banned.

Should Utica High School change its nickname? The answer is yes, according to the Michigan Department of Civil Rights. The department said that high school nicknames—such as Chieftains for Utica High School—harms students’ education and asked the U.S. Department of Education to ban the use of American Indian mascots, nicknames and “imagery” at the high school level, the Detroit Free Press reports. Utica was one of 35 high schools mentioned in the Michigan Department of Civil Rights’ complaint. "A growing and unrebutted body of evidence now establishes that the use of American Indian imagery reinforces stereotypes in a way that negatively impacts the potential for achievement by students with American Indian ancestry," the department said …
