Utica Community School's Athletic Director Robin Dilday was honored with the 2012 Allen W. Bush award.
It's ben a big year for Utica Community Schools athletic director Robin Dilday, who has been honored for his significant contributions to student athletics at the league, state and MHSAA tournament levels. Dilday is one of four administrators to earn the Michigan High School Athletic Association's Allen W. Bush Award for 2012. The award, named after president of the MHSAA Al Bush, honors individuals for past and continuing service to prep athletics as a coach, administrator, official, trainer, doctor or member of the media. The award was developed to bring recognition to men and women who are giving and serving without a lot of attention, according to MHSAA. Local swimmers compete in Ypsilanti at the Michigan 14 & Under Long Course State Championship Swim Meet at Eastern Michigan University.
A dip in a cool pool is more than just a favorite summer pastime for some local kids. Seventeen swimmers represented the Utica Shelby Swim Club (USSC) at the Michigan 14 & Under Long Course State Championship Swim Meet at Eastern Michigan University this weekend. Athletes from Utica, Shelby Township, Macomb Township and Rochester were among the fastest 600 swimmers in the state competing for top honors. The Utica Community School Board has asked the community to find a way to pay for the district's winter and spring programs.
Seventh- and eighth-grade Utica Community School children will play fall sports, but the winter and spring sports programs were cut from the 2011-12 school year budget. “We aren’t eliminating fall sports,” said UCS Board of Trustee Carl Territo. “We’re giving you an opportunity to continue should a plan be worked out to find the funding.” Nearly a dozen emotionally charged parents and coaches spoke to the board and proposed alternative funding plans from pay-to-play, independent fundraising and raising concession stand prices at athletic events to offset the cost. “Let’s be creative and find a way to save it,” said UCS parent Lisa Studzinski. “Let’s work through this and find an avenue.” Assistant School Board Superintendent Robert Van …
