With Auburn Road construction due to continue through July, small business owners between Ryan and Dequindre are asking customers to continue their support and not be deterred by tedious detours.
Summer can’t come quick enough for small business owners on Auburn Road in Shelby Township. Just one month into what promises to be a messy, albeit necessary reconstruction of Auburn Road between Ryan and Dequindre, area businesses are already feeling the loss of customers deterred by orange barrels and barriers. “It’s a complicated procedure and definitely has affected business,” said Doris Mukalla, owner of the International Book Centre at 2391 Auburn Rd. “Drivers see the barriers and stay away.” While parts of Auburn Road are still accessible, the road will be completely closed to through traffic at the height of construction. However, almost all businesses are accessible via side streets and the Macomb County Department of Roads says …

The reconstruction, which will take place between Dequindre and Ryan in Shelby Township, will include a new road surface, left turn lanes and storm water drainage.
Mark your calendars, motorists. The orange barrels are scheduled to go up Feb. 4 on Auburn Road between Dequindre and Ryan. Shelby Township Planning Director Glenn Wynn said the reconstruction will include a new road surface, left turn lanes and storm water drainage. Work is expected to be completed by mid-July. The township will use its remaining community development block grants to cover its portion of the project's cost, Wynn said. These are the last funds available until the grant cycle renews in 2015. The Macomb County Department of Roads has scheduled more than $38 million in road projects this year, with the $2.7 million reconstruction of Auburn Road between Dequindre and Ryan leading the way. The reconstruction is due to start in February and wrap up by July, at which point three additional projects will already be in progress in the township. Starting in June, and to the tune of $8.6 million, construction crews will begin widening Hayes Road to five lanes between 21 and 23 mile roads. Luckily for Shelby Township taxpayers, the township will cover only a fraction of …

It's that time of year again. The weather gets warmer. Flowers bloom. And, orange barrels pepper Macomb County as millions of dollars in construction projects prepare to test drivers' patience. The Macomb County Department of Roads is ready for a busy 2012 construction schedule that affects commuters in places, such as Chesterfield, Lenox, Macomb, Shelby, Richmond and Washington townships as well as Mount Clemens and Sterling Heights. “We’ve got another aggressive schedule this year with many planned road improvements,” County Executive Mark Hackel said in a prepared statement. “Despite rising costs and sluggish road funding, the Department of Roads continues to get the most from our taxpayers’ dollars in an effort to improve our …
