Information in this crime blotter was supplied by Utica police. Where arrests apply, they do not indicate convictions.
A 21-year-old Clinton Township man's pursuit of a $300 headphone set from Best Buy landed him in hot water after jumping in a cold pond, according to Utica police. Around 8:30 p.m. Jan. 31, store employees notified Utica police of an alleged shoplifter who fled without paying for a pair of Dr. Dre Beats Headphones. When officers tried to stop him, he ran through the parking lot toward the rear of the store. A police officer deployed his Taser, hitting him with one probe but he continued on, the police report states. The suspect then ran into the retention pond behind the complex, pushing through water and ice. When he made it out of the pond, the pursuing officer, who followed him from land, found him on Utica Park Boulevard, the report …

Utica has a Best Buy store, but the list of closures has not been released.
Best Buy executives may be giving up on some of their big-box stores, according to a Wall St. Journal report this week. The Minnesota-based electronics chain said it would close 50 Best Buy stores. At this time, however, the list of stores to close isn't known. Utica has a Best Buy store on Utica Park Boulevard. Other Best Buy stores that are nearby include one on Gratiot in Roseville and another in Chesterfield. "I am not satisfied with the pace or degree of change we have made up to this point," Chief Executive Brian Dunn said in a conference call with analysts, adding, "We are evolving our retail store strategy. We are increasing our points of presence while decreasing our overall square footage." Best Buy shares were off as much as 9 …

The following arrest information was supplied by the Utica Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.
Utica police arrested a Chesterfield Township man Wednesday on suspicion of stealing two iPods from Best Buy on Hall Road. Police said they were called by the store's loss prevention department around 9:50 p.m. on a report that a man had just walked out the front door with two $399 iPods in his pocket. A Utica police officer stopped a man, later identified as Val Bond, before he entered his vehicle in the parking lot and asked if he had anything on him that was stolen. According to the report, Bond admitted to stealing the two iPods inside. He also had plastic shucks in his vehicle that are often used to open containers that store high-end electronics. Inside of Bond's vehicle, officers found another iPod, which he later confessed to …

Local stores such as ABC Warehouse and Best Buy will keep special deals coming in the hope that customers do the same through the end of the year.
The good news? Black Friday weekend sales showed a $7 billion spike in consumer spending. The bad news? Industry experts say this will likely prove more of a blip on the year's retail radar than proof of a sustained economic upswing. But local stores are keeping the deals flowing and their outlook optimistic. According to the National Retail Federation, a record 226 million shoppers took advantage of the sales at stores and websites during Black Friday weekend–a 6.6 percent increase over 2010's numbers–and judging by the lines seen in Macomb, local customers contributed to these record numbers. “We opened at 8 a.m. (Black Friday) and had a line wrapped around the building,” said Tom Brillati, ABC Warehouse electronics expert. "A lot of …

A 36-year-old Shelby Township woman who was shot by a Utica police officer with a Taser gun while she was arrested two weeks ago was charged with assaulting, resisting and obstructing a police officer. Tanisha Boyd was arraigned on the charges before Judge Douglas Shepherd in 41-A District Court on Oct. 17. Police said they first made contact with Boyd on Oct. 13 after Best Buy employees called and said they identified Boyd and her husband, Craig Harris, as being in the store earlier in the day when a laptop was stolen. The Best Buy loss prevention employees also told police the vehicle used in the crime was registered to Boyd.
