Cindy Menzies is a breast cancer survivor. She is also an oncology nurse who never expected to walk into her own office as a patient. But there is a silver lining to the two surgeries, seven weeks of radiation and five years of Tamoxifen that Menzies endured, and her father was the first to recognize it. "My dad is the ultimate optimist," said Menzies, who lives and works in Oakland County. "When I told him I had breast cancer, the first thing he said was, 'Wow, you're going to be such a better nurse from this.' "And you know what? It's so true." As National Breast Cancer Awareness Month draws to a close, you can donate to the cause at these local businesses.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month ends Wednesday, along with several charity drives for breast cancer research at Shelby-Utica area businesses: Customers at the Shelby Township Kroger stores may purchase a pink ribbon for $1 or make a coin box donation to benefit breast cancer awareness and research. All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society and the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute. The Pink Pumpkin Patch Foundation, a nonprofit organization that funds breast cancer research, is working with major retailers this month to raise money for breast cancer research through the sale of special pink-skinned pumpkins. Treated at St. John Medical Center in Macomb Township, among other cancer centers, Paula Ragatzki has undergone surgery, chemo and radiation therapies in her fight to overcome Stage III breast cancer.
Even after winning her battle with breast cancer, Paula Ragatzki is still trying to find a new normal. The Shelby Township woman was diagnosed with Stage III cancer in March 2010 and has since sought treatment at St. John Hospital Van Elslander Cancer Center Grosse Pointe Woods and St. John Medical Center in Macomb Township. At the time of diagnosis, the disease had spread to the 16 of 20 lymph nodes and surgery, chemo, and radiation would be necessary to stop the spread. Although few ever expect a cancer diagnosis, this was especially true for Ragatzki, as she did not even feel a lump; her physician found the mass during a routine exam. Jaclyn Schultz, of Wyandotte, was networking in her career as a media strategist when she decided to enter the Miss Michigan pageant as a new challenge. A newcomer to pageants, Schultz was hoping to finish in the top 15. But instead, she won the crown. Schultz, 24, who works for Brogan & Partners in Birmingham, was crowned Miss Michigan USA 2013 at ceremonies in Port Huron. The bakery-restaurant's signature Pink Ribbon bagel will be sold in October to raise funds for breast cancer organizations.
The Panera Bread Pink Ribbon bagel is back. On Oct. 5, metro Detroit bakery-cafes, including those in Shelby Township, will hold a "Go Pink Day" to mark the 11th year of Panera Bread's October fundraising effort for breast cancer causes. Sold in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the signature bagel has raised more than $1.25 million for breast cancer charities nationwide. You might be able to find help fighting breast cancer and other types of cancers at your local grocery store and fitness centers, according to the research findings of Dr. Marian Neuhouser, Ph.D, RD. Dr. Neuhouser is a nutritional epidemiologist with a background in nutritional sciences. She is an investigator at Seattle’s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Her research is focused on lifestyle factors such as nutrition and physical activity. Some factors may prevent breast and prostate cancer and improve survivorship in those diagnosed with cancer.
