Lace Up the Skates, Nautical Mile Pond Hockey Tournament is a Go

Organizers are planning to hold the tournament Jan. 25-27 on the canals next to Brownie's on the Lake in St. Clair Shores.

The recent sub-freezing temperatures may have put a chill on many outdoor events, but has organizers of the Nautical Mile Pond Hockey Winter Classic warming up plans for a weekend of games, activities and civic pride in St. Clair Shores. Organizers decided Thursday to move forward with the outdoor hockey tournament after temperatures recently dropped enough to cause the canals next to Brownie's on the Lake to freeze. Additionally, the seven-day forecast includes nighttime temperatures dropping below freezing. "We are a go," said Shawn Nicholson, vice-president of the St. Clair Shores Hockey Association and one of the organizers of the event. "I am a lot more confident now than I was two weeks ago." Ex-Red Wings to Attend Pond Hockey Tournament

Retired Red Wing Kirk Maltby will be the grand marshal of the inaugural Nautical Mile Pond Hockey Winter Classic in St. Clair Shores. Other Red Wings including Shawn Burr may take part in an autograph session during the January event.

Some well-known professional hockey players will be participating in a new event for weekend hockey players. Organizers of the inaugural Nautical Mile Pond Hockey Winter Classic recently announced that former Detroit Red Wings player and member of the Grind Line, Kirk Maltby, will be the grand marshal for the event Jan. 20 -22. Additionally other retired Red Wings including Shawn Burr may participate in an autograph session during the weekend-long tournament which is expected to attract up to 72 teams and upwards of 1,000 people. "We are bringing a lot of outsiders into our town that will hopefully patronize the businesses and restaurants throughout the weekend," said Greg Esler, parks and recreation director. The Macomb County Chamber brought elected, business and education officials together for the Lake St. Clair Appreciation Day.

Leaders from across Metro Detroit took to the water Monday to promote the economic and environmental importance of Lake St. Clair and neighboring waterways. The Macomb County Chamber brought together elected, business and educational officials from across metro Detroit for Lake St. Clair Appreciation Day.
